For: the account owner (admin)
Your server is backed up automatically every day. You don't need to do anything, but you can check the backups and make an extra one whenever you like.
See your backups
- Open Backups in the portal.
- The card Last Backup shows when the most recent backup was made, and Last Size how big it was.
- The History list shows all backups that are currently kept.
Make a backup by hand
Useful before a big change, for example before you deactivate several accounts.
- Open Backups.
- Click Create Backup.
- The new backup appears in the History list when it is finished.
How long backups are kept
The card Retention: 7 daily, 4 weekly, 3 monthly says it all. We keep the last 7 daily backups, 4 weekly ones and 3 monthly ones. Older backups are removed automatically.
Restoring
There's no restore button in the portal, but we've got you covered: contact support and tell us which backup (date) you need and what you'd like restored.
Good to know
- Backups contain all chat data and media. They are encrypted and stored in the EU.
- Messages in end-to-end encrypted chats stay encrypted in the backup too. To read them after a restore, people still need their recovery key.
- Media files (images, videos, files) are removed from the server after 365 days. Keep important files somewhere else as well. See Files and media.
